I was originally looking forward to seeing this latest installment of the X-men series especially after I felt the movie preceding it, Days of Futures Past, was found to be a bit lacking. However, my enthusiasm was short lived as this movie too, was missing something. The first in this series of prequels, X-men First Class, set a high benchmark in my mind, one which the two following it were unable to reach.
To its credit, the special effects in the movie are above par and the make-up and costume design are quite remarkable yet still I feel as an audience member I was too distracted by what I was eating at the cinema than what was going on on screen which is never a good sign. Perhaps Marvel placed a great deal more emphasis on making Captain America: Civil War (which was released at the same time) a movie beyond reproach that there was next to nothing left in the creative tank for X-Men Apocalypse.
