To kick off this latest addition to Wild Rose, as suggested by one of my readers I'm going to be looking at the evolution of villains throughout the hit TV series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Starting with season one and the show is in its infancy, leaving many to question its longevity. The show of course a sequel to the movie of the same name, sees the role of the main character of Buffy Summers switch hands from Kirsty Swanson who played the character on the big screen to that of Sarah Michelle Gellar who would play her for the next seven seasons.
This season sees our female protagonist deal with the relocation of her and her mother to Sunnydale, where she must now cope with the very real and ever present danger of being the new girl in school, oh and of course being the slayer. Much to her dismay Buffy soon realises that try as she might she cannot escape her destiny or the hellmouth that lies beneath the town.
While the first season sees Buffy face many foes, from psycho cheerleaders, to killer substitute teachers to demonic possession and even robots, none were as instrumental to the story arc of the season than that of The Master. A very old and threatening vampire that has but one goal in mind, opening the hellmouth and taking over Sunnydale. With obstacles at every turn, the audience is left wondering how will this teenager have any chance of defeating a monster several centuries her senior when even ancient prophecies predict her demise.
But in the end our young heroine overcomes all that stands in her way with the help of her scooby gang and triumphs otherwise there would be no other seasons. The Master while fearsome in his own right was merely the beginning in the long list of foes that Buffy would indeed go toe-to-toe with before the series would draw to close, some of those villains hitting closer to home then others. Showing that in the fight of good against evil not everything is black and white, but there are shades of grey also.
That's it for Part 1, for Part 2 stay posted and for all you Buffy fans out there ttfn :)
